May is the month of Emeralds!

Emeralds are the perfect stone to celebrate May birthdays. They are prized for their brilliant and beautiful green color but hold a rich history and symbolism too.

Historically, the emerald is a symbol of rebirth. It is believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune, and youth. The word "emerald" is derived from the a Greek word literally meaning "green". The most valuable emeralds are those with the richest, most desirable color green. 

According to the American Gem Society, the first emeralds were mined in Egyt as early as 330 BC and some estimates have the oldest emerald being 2.97 billion years old. In common culture emeralds are associated with the ancient Egyptians, namely Cleopatra. Cleopatra is the most famous historical figure to adorn herself with emeralds. The Egyptians used emeralds in burial rituals as well as for jewellery.

Today the emerald is the birthstone of May because it carries the brilliant green color of spring and is considered a symbol of rebirth. The emerald is also the gem of Venus, and therefore also considered to aid fertility.
